By some accounts, some areas of Male are 80% illiterate. Especially true in the more rural areas. For them, television is an important source of information and entertainment. ACCM, created by the Protestant churches and organizations in Mali, established ACCM (Association Chrétienne de la Communication au Mali - Christian Association of Communication in Mali) that maintains a video production studio.
The ACCM – Video production is able to document events, produce music videos, and produces a weekly TV program that is broadcast over Mali’s official and only government TV station ORTM. The broadcasts of ORTM not only reach the large urban area but is simulcast via satellite to all areas of Mali. Most of Mali watches their national TV station. ACCM has a free weekly program. The Bible teaching part of the program lasts 20 minutes.. Since 2007, total broadcast time of ACCM on national television has been expanded from 20 to 70 minutes per week. The remaining broadcast time is filled with different programs for specific target groups such as young people.
There is only one television station in Mali. The television is often outside, and everyone who wants to keeps watching. Three million people watch the Christian program. In addition, the public TV in the country of Niger is now broadcasting the ACCM’s produced Christian television programs.
